Okay, so here's the latest Zazzle Merchandise panel from my Jude Cowell Art Shop. Not sure if or when my newest creation--illustration 'Owl of Minerva' as a double-sided throw pillow--will turn up in the panel's slideshow, so check out my art shop whenever you may and browse to your heart's content, 24/7, with no strings attached.
My thought is that an Owl of Minerva pillow is perfect for a child's room, especially one with a magical or botanical theme! And when I have a chance to add to my Zazzle Pillow Gallery, I shall file them in a new Beautimus Pillows folder because that's what I called my designer handsewn line of cushy pillows back in the 1990s!
So look online for 'Beautimus Pillows' by Jude Cowell when your head needs a soft landing or your sofa calls out for a different sort of decorative pillow...
~:~
Art Note: Owl of Minerva was previously titled Minerva's Glen and you may see the drawing in full here. Plus, this image is also available as an Art Poster so scroll down a bit for a view and a direct link. Thanks! Jude
Blog Note: am trying an experiment by adding Amazon's MP3 clips widget in the 'New Age' genre...what else for Secret Moon Art browsing? ;p If the music annoys you please advise and I'll delete the widget forthwith and anon! jc

Cosmic Persona Designs gals visit Secret Moon Art
It's February 11, 2012, and for some unknown reason, Anne, Sybil, and Maeve are visiting Secret Moon Art today though I have no idea why since portraits such as theirs tend to turn up more often in my mildly adult-themed Cosmic Persona Designs collection of illustrations!
Perhaps they slipped by me while I was busily working on my entry into Sketchbook Project 2012...hmmm?

Or maybe the gals are here as reps for the (often secretive) Moon which, in Astrology, signifies women or a woman!
Art Note: My other Art Collections may include:
Cosmic Lilith Art, the chocolaty flavorings of Sepia Art Theater,
and Jude Cowell's Art Shop where you're cordially invited to drop in whenever you may!
Plus, you may wish to check out these Creative Places & People:
Shelli Pabis Photography (my friend of several years), hand-dyed yarns from Spring Tree Road (my fiberista daughter Maya!), and my long-published cousin, author Donny Seagraves. All of us are based in Georgia but you know what 'they say'...y'all come!
So if, like me way down in Georgia, you've ever wondered what it's like working at NYC's wonderful Agora Art Gallery, please allow Karin to fill you in on what it's like working at the gallery direct from an insider's perspective!

Buddha-esque Baby returns: Got Diapers?
Feeling a little nostalgic today, my last day of a 34-year career. Plus, new babies are on my mind so here is a re-posting of my drawing, Buddha-esque Baby...

Does he look serene and wiser than his year?
Still working on my entry for Sketchbook 2012 Project and happily I found out (thanks, Caitlin!) that my sketchbook isn't due until the end of April (because I signed up after November 2, 2011) rather than January 31--quelle relief to find I have more weeks in which to complete the project which at this point is about 2/3 done!
This gives me more time to concentrate on helping with a new baby in the family so hold onto your diapers and pray for serenity, right? ;p
~:~
You are cordially invited to visit Jude Cowell Art at Zazzle for leisurely 24/7 art browsing (posters, prints, stretched canvases, greeting cards, etc) whenever you can.

Does Mozart like Sketchbook Project 2012?

Mozart, a pencil portrait by Jude Cowell.
Art Alert!! There has been confusion concerning the deadline for sending in our Arthouse Sketchbook projects so I'm posting an excerpt from the Update I received today:
Reminder: There are two weeks left to work on your Sketchbook for the 2012 Project! Please postmark your book by January 31st, 2012. (If you signed up after November 2nd, you are in the Limited Edition Project and have until April 30th to submit your work.)
My own confusion is almost cleared up for I'm not certain if I signed up before November 2nd or not! (That was last year already...)
Guess I'll just have to complete my Sketchbook over this weekend, mail it in, and hope for the best even though I haven't begun drawing yet--because I thought I had until the end of April. Hope I've not confused anyone else about the correct postmark-by date--if so, I sincerely apologize!
And I'm fairly certain that my favorite classical composer, Mozart, would approve of such a global Art effort and could get any creative project done on time because they formed first in his noodle--well, maybe I can, too!
Happy Drawing Everyone,

Return of "A Night in Celadon Forest" by Jude Cowell

Night in Celadon Forest has returned to Secret Moon Art in honor of the Autumn season. Don't forget your lantern is my best advice!
Plus, there's a Full Moon in Taurus, you know, on Thursday November 10 (2011) at 3:16 pm est so the Taurus/Scorpio energies will be reflected by moonbeams during the evening as they swirl through the cool night air!
Click to view a horoscope of the Full Moon (@ 19Tau) with the chart set for Washington DC, a devilishly Scorpionic spot on Earth if there ever was one. Living there twice in my life taught me that if it taught me nothing else...

Media: Prismacolor oil pencils, Rexel Derwent watercolour pencils (dry only) on black paper which allows certain effects that you'll never achieve on white paper, no matter how hard you try! Try it and see what you think, and...

My drawing 'Predator in Blue' is shown here as a customizable Art Print for cat lovers of a wilder variety. Rrraowr-r-r-rrrr!
Now please pay very little if any attention to the 'cowelljude' title on my Jude Cowell Art Shop @ Zazzle. You see, when the shop was opened, the sign-up process wouldn't allow me to use 'judecowell' for some mysterious reason so I had to make a quick decision and ended up with a silly user name for my Zazzle account!

Have you seen my drawing of Purple Pansies somewhere before? Maybe you have here, there, or...perhaps as the banner image for my Zazzle Art Shop, mmm-m-m?
Well, don't go art browsing there yet!
First, please try to spy Purple Pansies on one panel of a 6-sided spinning Time Capsule Art Cube from 1996. Cosmic drawings are included so you can see what my pencils were up to in those olden days.
Spying Hint: you'll see more of the stone stairs from the drawing above and less of the pansies. C'est la vie!

World Drawing Day June 4, 2011: join in!
Such good news for those among us who love to draw!
Upload your artwork to the Drawing Day site on June 4, 2011 to be included in an online gallery and a chance to have your work published in the Drawing Day book. Being as prolific as I be, it's a bit of a head-scratcher to decide which image to upload - Children's, Botanical, or Adult themed? Perhaps something botanical from my Dreamyfish Art collection? Or should it be a freshly drawn offering?
Options, You've Got Options
Now you may prefer various options such as checking out the Drawing Day *FaceBook page, or using DrawPlus software by Serif for creating your entry in a spiffy way. Me, I'm old school: colored pencils on paper, and drawing for the love of it (since I could hold a pencil, age 2 1/2. Keeping enough paper on hand for a kid who loves to draw is a real challenge for parents, isn't it?)
Another idea is using YouTube to upload a video of your very self caught in the act of drawing, perpetrating in the light of day, revealing your chops for the whole world to see.
Now the goal of Drawing Day is the creation of one million drawings around the world on June 4, and I hope you'll plan to join in with the happy drawing throng!
~:~
*Pardon me for not providing you a link to the Drawing Day FaceBook page.
Months ago I closed my FB account though they retain my info so my connection to FB isn't truly broken, much to my annoyance. (It feels as if FB is holding my content hostage.) Yet you may still find a member or two occasionally linking there to my Political Astrology articles or perhaps to some bit of artwork.
Besides the myriad of security concerns about FaceBook's access to our private information, I became alarmed earlier this year upon hearing news reports that Russia and Goldman-Sachs were considering a FB buy-in.
Whether or not this became or will become the case, it shows how we put ourselves at risk to shady entities whenever we participate on the FaceBook site and the daftness of allowing any social network site complete access to information which should be under our personal control. The US government won't protect us - they're in cahoots! jc

Zounds! My drawing Spooky Fairy Night takes all the cake crumbs as Secret Moon Art's top ranking most-viewed image ever.
Published here November 2009, almost 900 peeks have accrued for what really is a simple drawing of white on black. Some shading has been added but only by hand.

Why are Van Gogh's Sunflowers fading to Brown?
Someone seems to have discovered the reason why over the years Vincent Van Gogh's famous yellow Sunflowers have been fading into a brownish haze. Don't leave us, Van Gogh's Sunflowers! Even if you are a floral symbol of monarchy!
(Sun = Leo = natural ruler = divine right of kings, as they think.)
Well, truth is, I have no sunflowers about the place for publishing here but I can sympathize with one of my favorite master painters. If only he could be around to decry this unfortunate fading which is seemingly due to something Van Gogh added to his palette himself to make his colors...brighter! It's a sad and classic case of unintended consequences, right?
This reminds me of some artwork I perpetrated in 1996, the first I'd drawn on black paper since high school art classes; then I had photos taken of the pieces which were transferred onto slides - no desktop publishing then, at least not for moi.
But when I scanned the slides for my art files later on, I found that a certain fading, yellowing, or, browning had occurred which you may just be able to peek through in this example of an original illustration from 1996, Pattillo Armadillo Arrives Late:

There's Pattillo on the grassy bank, upper left, as he arrives too late for an important neighborhood meeting (as the story goes.) If only the community's organizers had had Twitter in 1996! That's a falling star plunking into the water and some curious fish investigating.
Actually, this is one of the first portraits I ever did of my children's book character Pattillo Armadillo and it illustrates a story which I won't regale you with now. Compare the above drawing's 3rd generation, muddied tones to the much more recent drawing, same character, Pattillo Finds Mystery Footprints (at the Pond), below:

A clear difference, yes? ;p
Well, great tasks can be accomplished these days by expert art restorers and I hope their skills and experience may successfully rescue the fading Sunflowers of Vincent Van Gogh.
To read a brief yet intimate profile concerning the hero's journey of the inestimable Pattillo Armadillo, click here for a Gather feature with pictures.

Tea Party at 318 Silvery Tree Path!

318 Silvery Tree Path is a fairly recent drawing inspired by the first children's dummy book I ever created called Silvery Tree Path. Fairies were not supposed to show up in my drawings back then for they weren't consciously invited, yet pink fairies appeared anyway which is a typical happening when you draw on black paper!
You know, there's something about black paper that I've always liked. Perhaps it's the 3D feeling I get when shading layers of colors as images form and seem to come out of the blank page toward the viewer which encourages whatever visionary or visualizing ability a pencil artist possesses. Actually there's almost a sculptural quality which I never get when drawing on white paper.
There can be a definite spiritual, cosmic quality as well - perhaps because the black areas suggest an abundant cosmos of vast space to my astrologer's eye. I am a fan of the cosmos!
Anyway, you see here one of my 'shroomhome' illustrations wherein tea and buttery scones are served in front of the fireplace each evening and one reads fascinating books late into the night...
~:~
If you like cosmically inclined art, you may also be interested in viewing Night Scene of a Secret Moon which retains a lot of the black paper before the drawing was completed and colored. Wish I'd left it in this unfinished version!
Oh, and I added some Cetus the Whale info, too, for good measure.

Secret Moon Art says, Happy New Year 2011!

Happy New Year to All!
Well, today is December 28, 2010 and with 2011 soon upon us Secret Moon Art offers a thankful and bubbly toast to all its viewers, visitors, and discriminating art supporters - you're the best!
Waiting round the January 1, 2011 bend is a Solar Eclipse on January 4, 2011 @ 13Cap38 which 'eclipses' my natal Sun. As you know, eclipses are considered 'wild cards' in Astrology (well, in life actually!) so there's no certainty how having a Solar Eclipse for my birthday will play out for the erstwhile artist and blogger who types at you now.
One thing I do know: 2011 will be an important year in some fashion for me personally and it remains to be seen just how. What to expect? Well, 'wild card' evokes similar vibes as those of quirky planet Uranus in a horoscope so 'expect the unexpected' may be my best personal prognostication for the moment!
~:~
Astro-Notes: Opposing our nation's natal Sun (the leader), the Solar Eclipse 13Cap38 of Jan 4, 2011 is part of the 13 North Series whose initial eclipse occurred on August 14, 1776 @ 21Leo52 with Jupiter 14Can40 conjunct US natal Sun. It is closely associated with the founding of America and its energy has these particular influences:
large groups and associations; ambitious group projects that require the breaking of an existing bond which leads to shared success; separation, then joint achievement. (Paraphrasing Brady's Predictive Astrology.)
Compared to what our nation has experienced in the last decade, this eclipse's influence could be a lot worse, couldn't it? And manifesting so near New Years Day, the eclipse will 'mark' the entire year of 2011 so I sincerely hope it bodes well for our nation and for the world because we could all use a fortunate break about now.

Are the Mona Lisa's hidden secrets revealed?
Now this is an interesting Art development based on a recently discovered text which allegedly reveals hidden numbers and letters within the mysterious, enigmatic eyes of da Vinci's Mona Lisa!
The figures are microscopic, but found there may be the number 72 which in Astrology represents a quintile aspect having the numerical value of 5, the Number of Man. Double it for 144 degrees of artistic talent, a bi-quintile.
In his book The Astrology of Relationship, Michael R. Meyer gives the quintile division this Keynote: The capacity for creative manipulation of energies and substances for the actual manifestation of visions and plans.
Symbolic Implications: The five senses, the five limbs (two arms, two legs, and the head), the four fingers and the thumb. Naturally, we think of da Vinci's famous drawing of the Vitruvian Man! Perhaps the newly found 'secret figures' are not quite up to 'Da Vinci Code' movie script standards but may turn out to be interesting nonetheless.
Well, the brilliant Leonardo da Vinci, the original Renaissance Man, was a quintile kind of artist with various interests which included the many illuminations of his day.
Read more on such topics here. (And yes, this gnat of an artist was born with a 5th house Mercury-Mars conjunction in Capricorn bi-quintile natal Saturn.)
So we may wish to consider the Earth-Water Sun Taurus-Moon Pisces personality blend of Leonardo da Vinci, born April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy (near Florence):
Sun Tau-Moon Pis mixes the Architect of Taurus with the Mystic of Pisces; Taurus is ruled by artful Venus while Pisces is ruled by abundant Jupiter and co-ruled by Neptune, planet of higher inspirations. This blend's vibe includes nature mysticism, creativity, poetry, and a deep love of beauty. It describes one who is easy-going yet determined and has compassionate concern for the needs of others; this is a practical dreamer combo of a man who at heart is very private and yet warmly responds to others.
The mind-body-emotion connection is effortlessly understood by this blend, and sparing time to brood may be a regular indulgence (great for an artist!); a deep connection is felt to Mother Earth, so perhaps Leo had a secret grotto he'd steal way to for pondering purposes!
This combo well describes one who learns best by doing for it's a 'hands-on' blend of energies with a flair for giving symbolic expression to human feelings bwo Art. Hmmm...symbolic expression hidden in his paintings?
And in the Harveys' book Sun Sign-Moon Sign, we find mention of Leonardo in the Images for Integration for Sun Tau-Moon Pis:
"Through the power of the imagination a man is healed...A poet prepares his accounts in verse...The Mona Lisa."

Blue Winter's Path now a greeting card!

So if you're anything like me, December tends to be a very busy month in the real world and it isn't always easy to find blogging or Art time.
Yet today I did manage to place my drawing Blue Winter's Path into my Zazzle Art Shop as a greeting card so don your mittens and have yourself a meander down Blue Winter's Path, or send an image of it along to a friend, if you wish. **Edit 2024: sorry, no longer available,** it expired. jc
Because last I heard, the US Postal Service is still in the business of delivering greeting cards if the effort is made and a stamp attached! Plus, you'll find other cards and stuff at Zazzle as well, so why not have a browse?
With the December 21, 2010 Winter Solstice (and Lunar Eclipse) soon upon us, it all makes me feel brrr-ish just thinking about it...for I do love falling snowflakes served with cups of hot cocoa sipped by the fire! You too? ;p
Above image: a snippet from Blue Winter's Path (c) 2010.

Moonlight Rain and New Moon in Sag 12.5.10

Here's a little Moonlight Rain to celebrate (discreetly, of course!) the December 5, 2010 New Moon in Sagittarius, sign of The Seeker.
The illustration above shows a Full Moon which definitely isn't as dark as tonight, Saturday night, and Sunday night will progressively be for we're in the 3-day Balsamic phase prior to the precise moment the New Moon perfects with the Sun (and I'd need to draw a totally blacked-out Moon to show the lunation precisely, so why not settle for this lighter representation of a Full Moon, yes?)
Because in only two weeks, the Dec 21, 2010 Lunar Eclipse in Gemini will manifest as the culmination and fulfillment of this Monday's New Moon 13Sag28 when seeds of new ventures are planted and nurtured.
(Click link to view the New Moon's chart image w details, EST.)
Why, it's almost lyrical, the Dec 5 New Moon's Sabian Symbol: '14Sag'..."The Pyramid and the Sphinx" and yet something sinister underneath the symbol cannot be ruled out - especially if you study the mundane horoscopes of Politics and political thespians as I often do!

Celestial View from Turquoise Arch

In Georgia today it's cloudy and rainy and I'm in a Celestial View from Turquoise Arch kind of mood...you?
Thursday November 4, 2010 brings us Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Libra since we're just before a New Moon @13Sco40, the position of Venus' retrograde station degree of October 8, 2010.
This gives us a rather lovely midpoint picture and flavor of the day to consider for the New Moon: Sun/Moon = Venus: artistic interests; harmony; friendship; love awareness. (Tyl; Ebertin.)
A few famous folk who share the Sun Sco-Moon Lib blend in their natal charts are: Jayne Mansfield, Billie Jean King, Sylvia Plath, Ted Turner, Francois Mitterrand, and Marie Antoinette.
And the New Moon's Sun Sco-Moon Sco?
Ah, that blend is shared natally by the likes of: Georgia O'Keefe, Leif Garrett, Dracula's daddy Bram Stoker, politician and global operator Howard Baker, and The View's Whoopi Goldberg.

A Spooky Dream Forest!

For your Halloween 2010 treat: A Spooky Dream Forest!
This dream image reminds me of the Tarot card 18 The Moon with its kindly advice: don't fear the mysterious unknown...this is the darkness before the dawn...don't squander your energies with anxious worrying...and, let your intuition guide you to hidden opportunities...
Wishing You a Happy and Safe Halloween!

In time for Halloween 2010 and as per request, Moonrise at the Crossroads is now available to you as a 19" x 15" Bronze Matte UV wall art poster!
So does this drawing fall into the 'Spooky Art' category or is it simply another in my long line of Moon and Cosmic Art illustrations? I shall leave it for you to decide...

An Art Note: my original signature and imprints ~ Unscene World and Secret Moon Art ~ are visible at the bottom of this image. If you prefer that my hand lettering disappear from the art poster of 'Moonrise at the Crossroads' please convo me at: judecowell at gmail dot com with your request and I will upload a newer version to Jude Cowell Art Shop which will, however, crop off a small portion of the drawing. A Fairy's Secret Valley

Today a new drawing for you so you may meander down a secluded path in A Fairy's Secret Valley!
Yet because Secret Moon Art isn't exclusively for Fairy Art (or Faerie Art, if you prefer), I went wandering about on your behalf and discovered some lovely Fairy Art sites for ethereal perusal such as Fairy Art.net, Art by Sarah Pittman, and some free-to-use Fairy clip art which may be found at Karen Whimsy's site.
Related is the Sur La Lune Fairy Tale Blog, a treat for eyes and minds!
And of course, if you wish a journey to view the transcendental artwork of one of America's premiere Visionary Artists you simply can never go off-path with Mr. Gilbert Williams, an early inspiration of mine.
Now I feel a bit sheepish admitting it, but somewhere packed away I have a book of his paintings which was published quite a few moons ago - and when I locate it one day, you might be able to hear my woot! all the way from Georgia!
Oh where can it be? Perhaps the pink fairies purloined it...

Moonrise at the Crossroads? Well, Boo!

Yes, Moonrise at the Crossroads has been published here before and seems to show up in quite a few google searches. But since it's a favorite drawing of mine (even though I usually lean toward full color rather than black and white), I'm posting it now in honor of Autumn Equinox 2010 and the lovely Full Moon of last evening!
Plus, since Halloween is almost upon us I am reminded that this image turns up rather well when people google terms like 'spooky art', too. Boo!

Getting Ready for Salvador Dali

In a couple of weeks this pencil artist shall be Dallying with Dali at Atlanta's High Museum of Art!
A favorite 'showman' artist of surrealism from my childhood, Salvador Dali's work is on display in Atlanta, Georgia, some of which has never before been viewed by the public. The exhibition is titled, 'Dali: The Late Work' so please click for more details.
The image above is a detail from my drawing Ecology Woman, an effort which I am quite certain was inspired by my early interest in the surrealism of Salvador Dali, among others.

The Existential Gardening of Layla Morgan Wilde
Not being a photographer any longer, I possess no garden photos of my own to publish here but writer Layla Morgan Wilde certainly does.
Her feature I Garden, Therefore I Am is an organic marvel unto itself, and if you appreciate discovering an isle of calm in the midst of a crazy world, Layla's feature is not to be missed.
Photo Collages always tend to catch my attention, too, of course, and multi-talented Layla has perfectly captured images and words of August's fading summer moments within a gilt-edged frame which will delight both viewer and reader!
Meanwhile, this particular SMA entry needs gracing with a photo or two of its own, something garden-y, botanical, seasonal. How about a couple from my photographer daughter Maya Henderson?
As you may know, Maya is an online fiberista who hand-spins, paints, and dyes all manner of wool and fluff into fabulous skeins of yarns for special knitting projects. How fortuitous that she can use her way with a camera to showcase the color-drenched yarns offered in her etsy shop. Yarn colors are morphing there just like the seasons!

Oh, how about one more snap before summer ends altogether? Perhaps something less focused and...evergreen, a personal favorite of mine!

Creosote Blooming in Moonbeams

Here's a semi-completed close-up of my newest botanical drawing Creosote Blooming in Moonbeams drawn with my favorite oil and watercolour pencils on paper...moonbeams complimentary. If you can tell from this cropped little tidbit of an image, the style is my oft-used blend of Virgo-botanical and Pisces-visionary.
But just to be sure, why not mosey over and snag the fuller and finished version of this illustration? You'll find it right now in my 24/7 Art browsing place, Jude Cowell Art Shop @ Zazzle.

This illustration is entitled, Pattillo Wakes at Moonrise.
Well, of course he does. For he's an armadillo with a natural habit of foraging at night for ants and grubs! Mmm-m-m-m...yum yum.
And here's Pattillo catching a little shut eye, making a pit stop on his journey to a greener clime.

Silverbelly: BP-Gulf Oil leak now capped!

Oh look! A little Silverbelly has floated in from Dreamyfish Art to Secret Moon Art to crow a bit - well, to glub, actually - over today's capping of the BP oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico!
Oil is now longer flowing as of BP's efforts today so let's hope the oil keeps not flowing, shall we? Woot!
Then perhaps my faith in the flavor of the July 11, 2010 Solar Eclipse isn't completely misplaced even though today's success (coming a mere 4 days after the Eclipse!) is temporary with BP saying they plan to 'plug' the well in August, which is meant to be a more permanent solution than today's 'tight-fitting' cap.
The July 11, 2010 Solar Eclipse in oceanic, watery Cancer (@19Can24, the sign of the crab!) contains a flavor of 'things at first seem worse, then clear with successful outcomes' so after all these weeks of oil, gas, and dispersants ruining the waters, shores, and livelihoods of the Gulf Coast region, this 'clearing' outcome sounds very good to me. You?
