A drawing finally completed: Circe with Sisters!

July 2, 2018: Now that my eyesight is greatly improved to its former goodness after two surgeries (right and left), I'm happily at my drafting table again! Actually, the title of the drawing below is, Circe, Charybdis, and Thelma although which sister is which is a challenge only you, dear viewer, can figure out! What say you?

For more Jude Cowell Art images, you're cordially invited to browse my Fine Art America portfolio open for viewing 24/7! Now here are two...

Mythological Links of Interest--plus, Thelma:

The Spellbinding Story of Circe, Goddess of Magic (pronounced kir' kee, y'know).

Who Is Charybdis?

And then there's Thelma, a name which may or may not derive from 'will' or 'volition' for it does sound much like the arrogant Thelema philosophy developed by freaky devil-worshiper Aleister Crowley (1875--1947).

But never fret for no devils ever lurk in any of my drawings!

#124 Bambo Tuck's 'Shroom Home on Silvery Tree Path!

Here's an illustration of Bambo Tuck's 'ShroomHome #124 from my unpublished children's book Silvery Tree Path (circa 1996):

As were many of my drawings during the late 1990s, this one is drawn on black paper and embossed with metallic pencil which you can probably tell from the silver raindrops (actually aluminum pencil) in this scan of an actual photograph!

Portrait of an 'Incomplete Gal' - now Vivian Astoria!

*February 22, 2018: A few days ago I posted here a partially drawn image titled, 'Incomplete Gal' (name this drawing)'. Today I shall post the completed (fini!) pencil portrait of....

Vivian Astoria McClellan and here she is now...

Sending Thanks to All my Facebook Friends (you know who ya are) who suggested possible names for this visage, this character study in pencil!

But why 'McClellan'? For fun. And because for me it represents a 'mysterious' or hidden ancestral line due to 17th century morals (or their lack!) when titled gentlemen kept mistresses as if they were kings (the gentlemen, not the mistresses). And so it seems that if one of my Webb ancestors, John D. Webb, is in the line of a certain immigrant-to-America Thomas Terrance Webb as he apparently is, Thomas took 'Webb' from his mother's family (she, Ann Webb of Colerain, Ireland) and his papa was her main squeeze, Thomas McClellan so long hidden (as things now appear hundreds of years on). If you're wondering, the answer is No, Ann was not his only mistress. (Follow the Thomas McClellan link and scroll almost all the way down to the DF41 Webb Cluster paragraph.)

Which only shows that you never know which sort of nougat you'll bite into when shaking your family tree!

Now as you know, the McClellan surname through the centuries has picked up multiple spellings as so many surnames do and you'll find them and other historic details about the family if you check out the MacLellan Clan pages!

To close, here again is Version One of Vivian Astoria McClellan just to keep both images on the same page (although they are the same drawing!):

New! Incomplete Gal (Name This Drawing)

In the olden days of Secret Moon Art ('round about 2005 and beyond) I sometimes posted unfinished drawings in this gallery, then published the complete version a bit later. Since I recently began drawing again, the urge to return to this 2-step practice has overtaken my best judgment.

So here is my latest attempt--its working title, Incomplete Gal:

Of course, in a certain sense, as long as we're still around, we're all incomplete, are we not?

Even so, if you'd like to see the finished drawing, please share this post and/or comment...your suggestions for her name are welcome too! Does the gal pictured above favor anyone you know?

Jan 3 2018: A Bit of Jude Cowell Art for the New Year!

Here's a drawing from a few years ago titled, Par-Tay! which seems appropriate for the just-passed holidays. Par-Tay!, with its masks and Chirotic poses, was originally posted to my Cosmic Persona Designs collection but I shuttered it because Google and a few viewers couldn't handle chiffon-clad figure studies. Guess the old adage, Don't Go To those Places wasn't in their lexicon!

But never mind because in 2018 you are cordially invited to browse my FineArtAmerica Boutique of drawings now available in various forms! Actually, an art-decorated tote bag would be nice...

Wishing You All a Happy and Prosperous 2018!

Dora's Pink Shoe Envy by Jude Cowell

Dora's Pink Shoe Envy is an ancient drawing originally posted to my now-defunct art gallery blog Cosmic Persona Designs which was mostly figure studies and mask-related illustrations.

Some of the pencil portraits were on the slightly racy side which Google couldn't handle so I shuttered the blog. You can go there now if you like but there are very few images left and an echo ripples through its halls and empty spaces are on its walls!

The Secret Contained in the Number 11

Because of a tattoo on her forearm that says 011, 'Eleven' has turned up recently as a young girl's name in a popular TV series Stranger Things. And as it happens, 11 is about to become part of the few posts I'm planning to publish here featuring individual numbers. Tonight it's number eleven's turn under the spotlight so let's begin.

In Western Astrology, number 11 relates to the 11th sign of the Zodiac, Aquarius, and a horoscope's 11th house of Groups, Associations, Hopes-Wishes, and Collective Aspirations. This associates 11 with the influences of planets Saturn (ancient ruler of AQ) and Uranus (higher octave ruler, aka, co-ruler) and both planets resonate with Astrology, novelty or 'New Age' pursuits, other unusual or occult studies, futuristic or progressive design, past and future (ancient or vintage vs avant garde or modern) studies such as Archaeology, Genealogy, various branches of Science, alternative healing methods and/or practice, humanitarian endeavors, and more. Plus, houses, or departments of life, have their opposite house--here, it's a question of the 5th-11th polarity, aka, the self-will axis which includes 5th house Creative Pursuits, Romance, Children, Risk-Taking, and Gambling.

Now in esoteric realms the number 11 is intriguing to behold! It is equivalent in Hebrew to the letter Caph and is classed by some scholars as prosperous, and by some as having "an evil reputation", perhaps because there are said to be "11 Paths of Darkness." (Seems to me that one path of darkness is one too many but I digress somewhat.)

"In the Sepher Yetzirah the 11th Path is one of Glittering Intelligence for it is "endowed with special grandeur so that he who reaches the end of it with true understanding may be permitted to look upon the face of God and live."

In occult symbolism, number 11 is represented by "A Hand Clenched; Force (pictured by a maiden closing the jaws of a lion); A lion muzzled." This calm maiden has that very look of true understanding on her face and is thus able to close the crouching lion's jaws without fear or pain. Although some form of violence may apply, liberty, power, courage, energy, and "success in fearless ventures" are indicated, plus, the knowledge of how to 'rule the stars'. One cannot understand God's laws unless he studies them."

For "if the Word of God be understood, man would know how to act when faithful action is needed. This is the secret contained in the number 11.

The Vibrations of the number 11 are Lunar."

Source: The Symbols and Meaning of Numbers, Isodore Kozminsky.

And last but never least is the strange Uranian 11:11 phenomenon apparently inspired by the advent of digital clocks but that's a post of a different timber altogether.

Feb 25, 2017: Giselle - a pencil portrait by Jude Cowell

Now this capture using my phone didn't turn out as clearly as I wanted but since 'Giselle' is a crop of a large drawing of mine (Giselle and Margot from 1995! Unscene World was my first imprint), you can barely see a smidgeon of a second figure, Margot. The original drawing on white paper is approximately 18" x 24" and cannot be placed in a regular scanner bed, hence the soft focus photo:

July is here and hot and it seems that an ancient drawing of mine has turned up to celebrate our two-week political conventions going on as I type. Bet Republicans and Democrats won't meet any delegates like these who are having an annual ladies-only Hen Party!

My first Kindle Fire photo app experiment!

FayeandToni

Here’s my first photo taken with the Kindle Fire photo app of an older drawing of mine, Faye & Toni, which is displayed on a wall at the moment (which is why the image is slanted and rather odd looking.)

Colored pencil on white paper isn’t my usual mode as you may know for I tend to prefer the depth of colored pencil on black paper. Still, the ladies do seem quite happy, don’t they? (Or can you tell with those blubbery lips?)  Winking smile

Now this drawing and several others on white paper were perpetrated between 1995 and 1999 and are too large to fit in a home scanner bed. The size of this image is 18” H by 24” W so you see what I mean: no scanning, no publishing in my online galleries.

But since I have the Kindle photo app to play with, perhaps I’ll show  you photo-app’d facsimiles of my larger never-before-published drawings from the late 90s and beyond. In fact, it may be fun for me and somewhat surprising for you.

Oh, and if you’re experienced using a similar app for a tablet, please leave a comment on this blog if you wish with handy hints for better photo-taking for I’d definitely appreciate it!

Your experimental ‘photographer’,

Jude

'Saturn Rising' now a cosmic keepsake box!

Though I've been so-o-o busy typing up the Oct-Nov-Dec 2012 issue of Stars Over Washington Monthly, today I took a break long enough to create a wooden keepsake box with one of my cosmic designs on top, Saturn Rising. So what do you think? It should be good for Capricorns like me for hiding away a few secret items, right?

Update 9.28.12: the 2nd issue of Stars Over Washington Monthly is now available for subscription and will be electronically delivered to your Inbox on the evening of Saturday September 29, 2012, if you so desire. This issue (Oct-Nov-Dec 2012) is offered at a Special Holiday Price of $15US (regularly $18) and addresses the October debates, Election Day 2012 (including our traditional First Vote at midnight in Dixville Notch, NH), the Solar and Lunar Eclipses of November, Winter Solstice 2012, and the closing of 2012 by the light of a Full Moon on December 28 (horoscope shown, as are those of both eclipses and the Winter Solstice with its difficult YOD patterns.)

With all the 4th quarter's cosmic and political events and synchronicities, this may be the one issue of SOWM you won't want to miss! To subscribe simply go to Stars Over Washington and click the link at the top of the sidebar.

Or, go directly to the sign-up form here and add your email address. Payment is through Amazon Payments and is a one-off charge for Issue 2 which contains 3 months' worth of astro-details with horoscopes set for Washington DC..

Thanks a bunch and here's wishing you an early Happy Holidays, Everyone!
